Classic symptoms include anxiety, fatigue and abnormal irritation, as well as cognitive and motor dysfunction.

Since heavy metals can cause chronic degradation of all detoxification pathways of the body, many different disease states are possible according to Klinghardt, MD, PhD.   Mercury collects and is concentrated in the connective tissue of the body (joints and tendons).  Thus, DMPS and DMSA pull it out of the connective tissue during detoxification.  Since DMPS and DMSA BIND only WEAKLY to heavy metals, they may drop it off at another location in the body.  This may or may not lead to the worse case scenario of mercury poisoning of the brain and of the kidney. 

Hair growth on the forehead or on the back of the head may be used to assess heavy metals in the body.  If you find high levels of toxic element in the hair, then this indicates mercury.  However, if you do NOT find it in the hair this says NOTHING.  Sometimes the body can be so sick that the body cannot excrete it, and the hair will be clean.  Additionally, the heavy metal in the body is compartamentalized.  This means that one moment you cannot find it, then a pocket  is released, and THEN you can find evidence of mercury in the hair.  Thus, the patient may detox sporadically in pulses.

Acute Mercury Poisoning symptom effects

According to United States Environmental Protection Agency 

• Impairment of the peripheral vision
• Disturbances in sensations ("pins and needles" feelings, numbness) usually in the hands feet and sometimes around the mouth
• Lack of coordination of movements, such as writing
• Impairment of speech, hearing, walking;
• Muscle weakness
• Skin rashes
• Mood swing
• Memory loss
• Mental disturbance

Patients complain of numbness, tingling, hearing loss, visual difficulties, gait unsteadiness, and tremulousness, as well as emotional and cognitive difficulties.

• From 1932 to 1968 toxic element methyl-mercury was released as pollution into the ocean surrounding Minamata in Kunamoto prefecture, Japan from a factory. The toxic element  mercury bioaccumulated in fish.  The  contaminated fish was consumed by the local population. The Minamata mercury poisoning caused the deaths of over 1000 people. The large amounts of methyl-mercury overwhelmed their natural detox ability and permanently disabled people.  Mercury poisoning symptom (s) include general muscle weakness, ataxia, narrowing of the field of vision, numbness in the hands and feet and damage to hearing and speech. In very sick cases, insanity, paralysis, coma and death follow after weeks of the onset of symptoms. A  birth defect form can also affect fetuses in the womb.  The contaminated fish were eaten by the cats.  The cats began to demonstrate neurological symptoms as evidenced by an unsteady gait.  They were known as the "dancing cats of Minamata" because of the neurologic damage caused by the fish.
• In rural Iraq in 1971-1972, grain treated with a methyl-mercury based fungicide was used by the rural population to make bread. It had been intended as seed stock for planting. By some liberal estimates 10,000 people died and 100,000 were severely and permanently brain damaged, making this a major methyl-mercury toxicity catastrophe. Wheat seeds, meant for crop planting, were treated with mercury as a fungicide.  This  treated wheat seed was handed out free in rural areas. Wheat was ground into flour, baked into bread and consumed. Conservative estimates 50,000 people ate the contaminated bread, 459 died, and 6,530 were hospitalized. This exposure also demonstrated the susceptibility of the fetus to in-utero exposure to methyl-mercury. 10 ppm in maternal hair was shown to have an adverse dose-response by the children born after the exposure of the mothers.
• In December 1997, Karen Wetterhahn, a chemistry professor, teaching at Dartmouth College was contaminated by the toxic element dimethyl-mercury. She spilled a drop on her latex glove. She experienced the symptoms within 5 months of the exposure.  Despite treatment, she died a few months later. On August 14, 1996 she was working with an organic mercury compound called toxic element dimethyl-mercury. She spilled a drop or two on her latex glove. Five months later, she saw some neurologic symptoms such as loss of balance and slurred speech. She went to the hospital. The single exposure had raised her blood mercury level to 4,000 micrograms per liter, or 20 times the toxic threshold. Blood levels were reported to be > 200 μg/L, normal range is 1-8 μg/L.^[1] They used aggressive chelation therapy ( DMPS, DMSA,or EDTA chelation may or may not have been used). Her condition rapidly deteriorated and three weeks after first symptoms appeared she fell into a coma and died a few months later, less than a year after her initial exposure.^[3][4]
• In April of 2000 Dr. Alan Chmurny tried to kill a former employee, Marta Bradley, by pouring the toxic element  into the ventilation system of her car.^[5]
